Shoujo Manga: High School Love

Sanda Ayumi

Title: Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
Author: HATTA Ayuko
Status: Completed with 16 volumes
Translation: Completed
Synopsis: Erika lied to her friends about having a boyfriend by showing a picture of an annonymous guy who turned out to be a schoolmate of hers and was shortly after recognized by her friends. Their conversations then was overheard by the guy, Sata Kyouya. Erika went to explain and proposed her idea of faking as lovers. However, Sata who gave off the nice-charming feelings guy turns out to be a black prince and used her reasons to blackmail her instead.

My review: It is a comedy romance filled with friendship goals and cuteness. Witnessing Erika and Sata’s growing relationship was adorable and felt real.

“Could it be that I’m actually more like a side character?”
Hatori Matsuzaki

Title: Heroine Shikkaku
Author: Koda Momoko
Status: Completed with 10 volumes
Translation: Completed
Synopsis: This could happen to any girl. Imagine being a heroine of a love story. Hatori also believed that one day she would get married to her childhood friend, Rita. But that’s not how the world works! She wasn’t the leading lady of her prince charming!

My review: It’s hilarious and sad at the same time but I loved everything about it. Hatori was a very endearing character to me, she felt real and I found myself rooting for her to finally realize that she doesn’t need to settle for a second character life, she can be her own heroine and still have her perfect leading man.

“Memories can be created with patience.”
Shuusei Kugayama

Synopsis: Shuusei Kugayama is the “prince” of his high school, but he has always turned down confessions, including one from Aoi Nishimori’s best friend. Although she initially hated him because of this, but when Shuusei moves in next door to Aoi, who lives alone, she starts changing her first impression about him, thinking to herself that he might not be such a bad guy after all…

My review:One of the first Mangas I have read and still one of my favorites. Their interactions were what made the manga so special to me. Their chemistry was electrifying ! It was hot !

His hand, no matter how tightly I hold it, it no longer feels warm to me.”
Nanase Sakashita

Title: Hana-kun to Koisuru Watashi
Author: Kumaoka Fuyu
Status: Ongoing with 10 volumes
Translation: Ongoing
Synopsis: Nanase Sakashita is good at playing the role of the model Student but that doesnt stop her from taking an interest in Hana-kun, the schools delinquent. Hana-kun accidently drops a small box while sneaking around on the school grounds. When Nanase tries to return the box, Hana-kun tells her to keep it for its already too late to give it to the person he likes. She then wonders who might be that person!

My review: This one portrays the unlikely love story of a top student and the school’s trouble maker. I loved how Nana influenced Hana in a good way and how they finally come to recognize their feelings for each other. I also liked how Hana man up and chased after her instead of keeping to himself and choosing to ignore his feelings.

“I wont hate that person. Even if my love doesn’t reach him. Because they are still my precious feelings.”
Kinoshita Ninako

Title: Strobe Edge
Author: Sakisaka Io
Status: Completed with 10 volumes
Translation: Completed
Synopsis: Having no experience in romance, the vibrant Ninako curiously explores the meaning of what “love” really is, and is surprised to feel a colorful range of emotions as she grows closer to the school heartthrob, the quiet yet gentle Ren, who also happens to be involved in a longtime relationship.

My review: I have long been conflicted about this manga. I could relate to Ninako especially knowing she is just a high school kid in love with the school’s idol but I still couldn’t chase the fact that he already had a girlfriend. Still, I did enjoy reading it to the end and it is one of my most memorable Mangas to this day.

Sweetest BL Manga

“I hate the part of me that’s a minority. (…) I can’t even bring myself to look for similar people despite having many ways to do it.”
Yoshinaga Yamato

Title: Koi Monogatari
Author: HATTA Ayuko
Status: Ongoing with 20 chapters
Translation: Ongoing
Synopsis: Hasegawa Yuiji accidentally finds out that his classmate, Yoshinaga Yamato, is gay. Eventually, he realises Yamato’s gaze is directed towards an unattainable love. While hanging together at a study group, Yuiji finds out that Yamato is a pretty nice guy, and despite his awkwardness, he starts rooting for him.

My review: This manga is such a gem. The story is slow paced and the fact that the mangaka takes her sweet time with the updates doesn’t really help either. However, this manga is worth, though it tackles pretty heavy subjects it still fills you with warmth and good feels.

“Seven days were long enough to make me fall in love.”
“Once more, walking with you, a new week begins.”

Shino Yuzuru

Title: Seven Days
Author: TACHIBANA Venio, TAKARAI Rihito
Status: Completed with 18 chapters
Translation: Completed
Synopsis: One Monday morning, Shino Yuzuru suddenly asks Seryou Touji out. Seryou, who’s pretty popular, has the odd habit of going out with anyone who asks him out first at the beginning of the week, then promptly dumping them at the end of it. “Anyone” apparently includes male upperclassmen like Shino, and thus, two spent a week getting to know eachother as boyfriends…

My review: This was a sweet read. I fell for the good natured Yuzuru as well as the swoon worthy Touji. The way they came to fall for each other is well portrayed. Their confusion, their longing for each other and finally their confession, a rollercoaster of emotions that leaves you breathless yet deliciously satisfied.

“Misaki…It’ not a bad thing. I mean (…) I think you’re happy too…
This is not a bad a thing“

Arikawa Youichi

Title: Hana no Mizo Shiru
Author: Takarai Rihito
Status: Completed with 16 chapters
Translation: Completed
Synopsis: Arikawa had an unexpected encounter with a fellow when he helped get up after he had tripped… On that same day, on his way home, he accidentally bumped into him again at the train station and accidentally picked Misaki’s flower necklace which seemed to have a sentimental value…

My review: An other moving story by Takarai sensei. Misaki was struggling with his sexual identity especially with what has happened to him in his younger years and Arikawa was exactly what he needed. Yet, he still couldn’t trust him and let go of his fears. It’s full of feels. It also has a short sequel that follows the their life together afterwards.

“Nice people are scary. That is why, of all the people I have ever met, HE scares me the most.”
Kaidou Ren

Title: Super Lovers
Author: Abe Miyuki
Status: Ongoing with 13 volumes
Translation: Ongoing
Synopsis: 17-year-old Kaidou Haru isn’t too happy to be spending his summer vacation in the wilds of Canada with his eccentric, estranged mother, but when she saddles him with civilizing his new adopted brother, 8-year-old wild child Ren, he takes up the mantle with aplomb, gradually learning to navigate the boy’s unruly demeanor and fostering a close bond that prompts him to invite Ren to come live with him in Japan once he graduates, hoping Ren can experience what it’s like to have a real family.

My review: What to say more about this other than it was my first BL, this was the manga that opened my eyes to the beauty of danmei love. Haru and Ren were the sweethearts of my heart. I cried and laughed and got anxious with them. Warning: they do have quite an age gap and they do meet while Ren is still a child, however, they were first and foremost brothers (step brothers), but their unique relationship evolved to something more along the years. Absolutely worth reading, no question asked!

“Today you can cry until you ran out of tears. But from now on, I will never let you cry, Gamou. I swear.”
Amamiya Hiroaki

Title: Higouhou Junai
Author: Fuwa Shinri
Status: Completed with 3 volumes
Translation: Completed
Synopsis: Lawyer Gamou Toshiki and Prosecutor Amamiya Hiroaki met in college and quickly became friends, but for the serious Gamou it was love at first sight toward the charming Amamiya. After being separated for several years, Amamiya has moved back to Tokyo and though Gamou knows there’s no chance of anything other than friendship, still hopes for something to change…

My review: The manga tells the story of Gamou Toshiki who is helplessly in an unrequited love with his college best mate Amamiya Hiroaki. What I liked about it, is how Toshiki tried his best to make Hiroaki fall for him, he didn’t shy away from his feelings and truly confessed his heart. Heartache is to be expected with this one but fear not you will eventually get your happy ending.
