Cutest BL korean dramas

Title: The boy next door

Year: 2017

Number of episodes: 15

Synopsis: KyuTae and KiJae are two college students who just moved next to each other. They frequently keep meeting up and always feel awkward. At one point they find out they are both friends with MinAh. The two constantly end up in funny and awkward situations that leads MinAh, her boyfriend Hyung, and any other people who pass by to believe that they are gay.

My review:It’s a slice of life kind of drama about the cohabitation of two university students seen through the eyes of a Fujoshi. It is very funny and you can’t help but want the romance to be true yet you also love the teasing!

Title: Where your eyes linger

Year: 2020

Number of episodes: 8

Synopsis: When an outgoing female student named Hye Mi is transferred to their high school, she inadvertently drives up the romantic tension between the two childhood friends by going on a date with Gang Gook – irking Han Tae Joo, and stirring up long-suppressed emotions.

My review: At first I was a bit puzzled because the two main leads acted more like friends than anything else but then the story quickly picked up and the romance was more upfront. It’s a sweet short drama that will live you with a warm smile.

Title: Long time no see

Year: 2017

Number of episodes: 5

Synopsis: This is the story of two men who are not exactly what they seem. Their sweet and ideal relationship might not entirely be the work of fate and when the truth is revealed, they have to face a harsh and dangerous reality.

My review: It is a rollercoaster of emotions. The story is a bit rushed I feel but that doesn’t take away from the beauty of the drama. You quickly get attached to the leads and start rooting for their happy ending.

Title: Life is beautiful

Year: 2010

Number of episodes: 63

Synopsis: Set in Jeju, the drama revolves around a loving family led by the parents Yang Byung-tae and Kim Min-jae. The story follows the family’s everyday lives and conflicts, including oldest son Tae-sub’s romantic pairing with divorced professor Kyung-soo, whose homosexual relationship their families react to while addressing issues of personal, social, and familial acceptance, leading to, finally, love and understanding.

My review: Tae-sub and Kyung-soo relationship was sweet, pure and heartwarming. I just loved their polar opposite personalities. Tae-sub character is more straight laced and afraid of facing his sexual orientation while Kyung-soo is the lady killer who is very comfortable with his homosexual feelings towards Tae-sub. Great show for sure !

Title: The lover

Year: 2015

Number of episodes: 12

Synopsis: The Lover is an omnibus series that depicts four different couples living together in one apartment complex.

My review: Similar to “The boy next door” Takuya and Joon-Jae are not gay but just roommates however after living together their feelings started to change and by the end of the drama they got an understanding of their feelings for each other. The show made me laugh a lot. The misunderstandings, the innuendos, the cultural shock (Takuya is Japanese) all created very funny situations.

Best Korean Romantic Comedies of 2019

Title: Crazy Romance

Synopsis: The film revolves around two co-workers: team manager Jae-hoon and new team member Sun-young. Jae-Hoon got dumped by his fiancé a month ago, but he still has not gotten over that while Sun-Young broke up with her boyfriend, who cheated on her. As they begin to work together, the two bond over the stories of their recent breakups.

My review: The chemistry between the leads is what made this movie so much fun to watch for me. I mean the story is great, a bit predictable but it is a romantic comedy after all, we do expect them to fall in love, it is the process that makes it quite enjoyable to watch and the movie delivers in this aspect. I laughed a lot, cringed a bit and cheered for them to end up together afterwards, so all in all, it was a hit for me.

Title: Inside me

Synopsis: Pan Soo is both a businessman and son-in-law of a mob boss. This tough guy, however, unexpectedly meets a freak accident and goes into coma in the hospital. When he wakes up, Pan Soo finds out that his soul is trapped inside a 17-year-old boy’s body.

My review: Comedy Gold, that’s exactly what this movie is. I loved everything about it. The big shot who suddenly turned into a socially awkward overweight high school boy, discovers that his first love had a daughter with him and now he struggles to get in touch with them while surviving inside this boy’s body.

Title: Trade your love

Synopsis: Seong-Suk’s family runs an airline. If he wants to inherit the company, he needs to get married. Hae-Joo is constantly pressured by her mother and 3 older brothers to get married. Hae-Joo wants to live her life on her terms

My review: The usual trope yet not your usual outcome! I liked it, I mean it was funny and I kept waiting for the moment they would fall in love like I am used to in this kind of setting of boy and girl meeting on a blind date and having a contract marriage. Hmm, it wasn’t what I expected but I found myself enjoying it. Love the lead actor by the way! He is quite a funny yet charismatic actor.

Title: Rosebud

Synopsis: In her 20’s, Jang-Mi wanted to become an idol. She got pregnant unexpectedly and gave up her dream. Jang-Mi is now a middle-aged single mother and raises her daughter Hyun-A. She is a typical mother and nags Hyun-A a lot, but will do anything for her.

My review: It’s a bittersweet story about the hardships that a single mother faced in order to raise her daughter. The movie was set in the 80s-90s so it gave us an idea about the Korea of that time. I liked it a lot and it did make me cry quite a lot too. It was interesting and moving with some comedy along the way.

Title: Tune in for Love

Synopsis: Mi-soo, a hardworking part-time worker at a bakery, exchanges stories with Hyun-woo on a radio program. Both fall in love and continue to cross path but timing is not in their favor.

My review: The nostalgic feel is what made me like this movie. As the story progressed we could see the change of society from the late 90s to our current time, it was very aesthetically pleasing. The plot wasn’t that much new but again it is a Romcom so it is to be expected. I liked both lead characters and enjoyed their interactions with each other. It was a nice sweet romance that you can’t help but watch with a smile.

Korean movies: Oldies but Goldies

Title: 100 Days with Mr. Arrogant
Year: 2004
Synopsis: After being dumped by her boyfriend just before their 100 day anniversary, Ha-Young meets a college guy named Hyung-Joon when she accidentally kicks a can that hits him in the face and causes him to scratch his Lexus. He demands she pay him $3000 on the spot. She escapes from him, leaving her wallet behind.
Hyung-Joon stalks her, demanding money to pay for his car. Since she is a poor high school student Hyung-Joon writes up a “Enslavement Agreement” for Ha-Young in order to pay for the damage to his car.

My review: It is simply hilarious. Ha-Young is your average high school girl, not very good at studies, loves to play and of course in love with the idea of love. She meets a handsome yet sadist college student who out of boredom decides to toy with her for a bit. Their interactions are so funny and the sexual innuendo just kill me! there is a scene at an elevator that I just can’t forget! Over all a good movie with an interesting premise and great chemistry between the leads.

Title: My Little Bride
Year: 2004
Synopsis: Bo-Eun is an ordinary high school girl who worries about SAT’s and has a crush on her school’s baseball team ace, named Jung-Woo. One day, Bo-Eun’s grandfather orders her to marry Sang-Min. When they were very young, Bo-Eun’s and Sang-Min’s grandfathers had promised that they would become in-laws. Despite their opposition, they are forced to marry because of the strong influence of Bo-Eun’s grandfather. Bo-Eun’s undercover married life begins: She pretends that she doesn’t have a husband and starts dating Jung-Woo. Bo-Eun believes that she can manage both men and live a double life. Everything goes smoothly until Sang-Min visits Bo-Eun’s school as a student teacher…

My review: The movie starts with an introduction to the leads. We get that they have a close big brother- younger sister relationship and then we are hit with the plot: they have to get married as already promised by their grandparents. Bo-Eun is just a high school girl who can’t fathom the idea of being a wife while Sang-Min is a goofy young man fresh out of college and still not ready to commit. Being childhood friends, the two soon learned to live together and we can see that they truly care for each other and how their feelings run deeper than they think. It was heartwarming, funny and quite enjoyable. Again, the chemistry between the leads was fantastic!

Title: 200 Pounds Beauty
Year: 2006
Synopsis: Han-Na is a very large girl with a warm heart. She also possesses an unbelievable voice. Han-Na wants to become a pop-singer, but due to her extra-large appearance, can only work as a faceless singer. She provides the vocals for a popular singer named Amy, a beautiful young lady that can’t carry a note to save her life.
Han-Na is also in love with Amiy’s music producer, Sang-Joon, but it’s a one-sided love. One day, Han-Na is invited to Sang-Joon’s birthday party and receives a red dress from him to wear to his party. Han-Na is excited, yet scared. After an emotional trauma, she simply disappears for one year.
Han-Na then returns as the beautiful Jenny …

A great movie that deals with topics such as body shaming and the struggle to make it into showbiz. Han-Na is a sweet girl who isn’t the most fit, she has a great voice and a good heart, yet, because of her physique, she doesn’t enjoy the life she deserves. After her plastic surgery, everything changes. People treat her right now, she gets an opportunity to be a singer and finally, the man she has been in love with starts noticing her. It’s a wonderful story that would make you laugh out loud one second and cry a river the next. A Goldie for sure !

Title: He Was Cool
Year: 2004
Synopsis: Having replied to a wicked post on her school website, Ye-won keeps getting a threatening call from a boy named Ji Eun-sung. Having heard about him from her friend, she keeps running away from him. But they kissed accidentally when Ye-won was trying to escape from him. Having his lips stolen by Ye-won, Eun-sung threatens her to marry him, adding that no other girl has ever kissed him before. The only thing Ye-won can do is to obey for whatever Eun-sung said. At first, Ye-won just hate him the most for his self-righteousness and unreasonableness. But she gradually finds herself is starting to fall for him…

My review: Typical story of “delinquent boy falls for sweet girl” and yet this one feels different. Maybe its the chemistry between the leads or maybe because Ye-won’s great personality but the fact is that this movie is the best of the genre. It’s both funny and interesting. It will leave you with a good feeling inside. Quite nostalgic too. It is one of my favorite movies of the late Jeong Da‑bin, the lead actress.

Title: My Tutor Friend
Year: 2003
Synopsis: Su-Wan is a sophomore in college, and she works part-time as a tutor to cover her tuition. She has had bad experiences so far with her students. She then meets quite possibly the most impossible to teach student yet Ji-Hoon.
Ji-Hoon comes from a wealthy family and at school is the known as the best fighter around. He’s also the king of troublemakers. Ji-Hoon is now repeating his high school senior year for the third time. He’s also resistant to taking Su-Wan’s tutoring lessons. Meanwhile, Su-Wan nearly reaches her boiling point and contemplates to quit her job, but the thought of telling her mother makes her continue on. Can Su-Wan ever get through to Ji-Hoon?

My review: A comedy through and through. The movie tells the story of a college student being a tutor for a high school student who is repeating his high school senior year for the third time so he is older than her. She struggles to get him to study and they fall in love along the way. The process is pure comedy though! Like he got angry and punched her crush for rejecting her, turns out the guy was intending to be a priest!

My review: The first word to describe this novel for me is sexy. It was unexpected for me to enjoy it so much even though I didn’t agree with a lot of the Mc’s actions but the chemistry between the leads made it up for me! I would reread it for sure just to enjoy the fluff and ambiguity of those brothers! the mc is all for revenge even though he claims to just want a good life! great characters very flawed though!

Qi Le shook with anger: “We’ll see about that!”

Everyone reminded him: “Everyone knows about your confession; everyone knows that you’re gay. Which girl would be willing to date you ah ?”

My review: A funny yet romantic story about the cute mc who after his death woke up in the body of a gay man foolishly in love with a scum top. The ml is his best friend who had loved him secretly while he was alive. There are a lot of interesting characters and cute couples! Enjoyed reading it a lot and would recommend it for sure!

Synopsis: A car accident made Xia Yao return to his third year of high school, he finally has the opportunity to make up for everything he regrets. The mistakes that have been made can now be mended. So when Xia Yao once again meets Zhou Du, the target of his unrequited love, he decides to choose a completely different route.

If you don’t love me, then I’m willing to set you free.

However, things seem to turn out completely different than what Xia Yao expected.

Before rebirth—

Xia Yao: I like you.

Zhou Du: What did you say?

After rebirth—

Zhou Du: I like you.

Xia Yao: I only see you as a classmate.

Zhou Du: ……【But that’s not what your diary said!】

Also known as 《A love affair triggered by a diary》

My review: The mc forced the ml into a relationship in his first life so he planned to set him free this time around. I liked the premise, it felt like a redo of all those angsts read with the pitiful mc and the brooding ml. Expect sweetness and fluff especially during the earlier chaps with a turn towards drama by the end. Still a good read even though it doesn’t have the best plots!

Xin Siyue’s eyes teared up as she was being kissed in Chen Sinan’s arms. “No! This wasn’t in the plot!”

My review: A very interesting set up, the mc chose to save herself by avoiding the ML and she did it so meticulously that she got the man weirded out. He was initially disgusted with her character but since she transmigrated into that body and started her journey towards saving her new self and family, the ml started getting curious about her and thus the story unfolds!

Fortunately, the older sister had gone back in time after having experienced a lifetime of suffering. This prodigal daughter returns to the turning point of her life. Pointing at her younger sister, she demands for her younger sister to hand over her husband.
Looking at this beautifully crying older sister, Ye Zhen swiftly yields and says, “Older sister, don’t worry. I haven’t even done anything with brother-in-law!”

To her shock, she later discovers that she’s pregnant.
With tears in her eyes, her older sister says, “Didn’t you say that nothing happened between the two of you?”

Ye Zhen looks at the great villain that doggedly pursues her. She is utterly and totally doomed.

There’s a great villain lying next to her, and she’s pregnant with a mini villain. How’s she suppose to survive?!

Later on, as Ye Zhen watches the great villain putting the baby down and changing the diaper, she sighs. “There’s nothing that can be done. I’ve already missed the golden opportunity to turn things around. How can I leave now?”

My review: I Loved how the mc was so sure of the ml’s character and just wanted out of that cursed fate! however, the ML wouldn’t let her flee as she wishes! It was fun to read about how the character’s original set up changed once the transmigration of the mc and the rebirth of her older sister. Things may not be as they seem. A good read with a cool female lead trying her best with what she is got!

Synopsis: Su Ran, a music prodigy, woke up transmigrated into a book.
At that point in time, the main story arc in the book had already been completed. As a villainess female supporting character, not only did she need to take over the original owner’s pitiful life in poverty, she also gained an instant son right at his rebellious period.
Ten or so more years from then, the son would turn into a twisted, evil villain. He would appear in one of the extra chapters to pick on the male and female lead’s children.

Su Ran: Son, you shouldn’t be too outstanding.
Su Han: Why not?
Su Ran: ’cause you will be killed.
Su Ran: Son, would you like to learn music from me and become a zen, little fairy boy who only needs to drink dew.
Su Han: No, I want to go into business so I can support you.

My review: I absolutely loved this novel. I mtled it all in one night. It’s not a light one so be careful. The original character that the mc transmigrated into is a very pitiful woman. she was just a teen spoiled and in love with the wrong person and got punished cruelly for it. I usually skip the angsty stuff but I tried my best to read it here because the story just compelled me to it. The MC’s character is the best, you can surely identify with her. Her child, the villain, is the most adorable teenager ever! I loved their relationship and how she salvaged this mother son trust and love. The ML here is just perfect, he accepted the mc with all her painful past without questioning her, he just wanted to make it better for her. His relationship with his son is quite interesting too, I loved their interactions but still needed more. In short a very a good nouvel !

Synopsis: Xu Xinyi woke up and had obtained a system, the system told her that she was a second female lead who would have a miserable end and that she has 2 choices, to endure all grievances and change for the better, or to walk the same road as the original and become a vicious woman.
She chose the second option.
One day Yi Yang couldn’t tolerate it anymore and, at the end of his patience, he demanded a divorce.
Xu Xinyi’s heart felt ecstatic when he put the divorce agreement in front of her but she looked at her husband and with a sorrowful, heartbroken look on her face. Then she waited for her husband to sign.
—“Hurry up! Sign quickly! I can finally leave this hellhole!”
But Yi Yang, who could suddenly hear Xu Xinyi’s thoughts, threw away the pen and said, “Not signing.”

Ever since Yi Yang discovered that he could hear Xu Xingyi’s thoughts, he found that while his wife kept kissing up to him and saying she loved him on the outside, in her heart she would laugh at that and think the complete opposite.
She only loved him on the surface.
“Husband, you are so nice, I love you so much ah~!”
—“I won’t have to be with this arrogant man forever, will I? I am really the most pitiful woman in the whole world!”
Yi Yang ” Xu Xinyi !!!!!”

My review: Hilarious, you will laugh out loud and wouldn’t know how to stop… yes it is that good. I am laughing right now writing this just remembering this gem of a novel. The MC is gold, her best friend is the funniest and the ml’s reactions are priceless. The ML couldn’t help but fall in love with her paradoxal behavior!

Synopsis: “I can’t accept this! I can’t! Even as a ghost, I’m going to spend eternity cursing that your relationship will shatter like glass! Break apart like a pair of mandarin ducks that fly away from each other!” With such a persisting obsession, it would be difficult for the vengeful departed spirit to move on.
Ji Man had only read a light novel to pass the time, but she was unexpectedly pulled into a very strange dream. She had become the novel’s most vicious villainess.
The novel rewinds to the beginning. The villainess that had been ordered to commit suicide reappears onto the stage and begins to follow the plot as she walks toward the novel’s ending once again, to a courtyard deep inside a marquis’s residence. A female lead that’s like the Holy Mother. Countless cannon fodders. The imperial family’s favor…

My review: A Great story with both a cool and strong female lead and an equally strong and clever male lead. They are perfect for each other. The romance is gradual and you can understand how they come to like each other. There are a lot of schemes and palace intrigues but you don’t get confused or bored. It is interesting and not too boring and I found myself invested in all the characters!
